Ad tech glossary

Headless

Technical definition

A software architecture that separates a system’s back end (data, content and business logic) from its user interface, exposing every capability through APIs so other applications and AI agents can use it directly.

The ADLINGO translation

Software with the screen taken off. The data, the content and the functions stay. The interface goes. Everything is reachable through an API, and increasingly through MCP, so an AI agent can do the work without ever logging in.

The term started with headless commerce and headless CMS, where one back end fed a website, an app and a kiosk.

In AI marketing it means two things:

Ask every vendor at renewal one question: can an agent do everything a person can do in your UI?

If the answer is no, you’re buying a walled garden.

AI: What we owe the team

I'm clocking two kinds of advertising executives right now: Ones who treat AI like a procurement decision, and the ones treating it like a leadership test. One buys tools. The other builds teams that know how to use them.
